After a few years of designing bottle labels, I was tasked with designing the first cans released by Foulmouthed Brewing in South Portland, Maine. “Horse of a Different Color” is a beer I actually even named for the brewery - when the type of beer they intended to brew ended up being the wrong color for the style.

Inspired by the Roald Dahl book The BFG, the artwork for this raspberry sour beer was designed to look like a vintage apothecary bottle. I made a pretty tight pencil illustration for the poster design, which then also became the can artwork. I loved creating artwork with this literary reference, and used the character Sophie’s quote after tasting Frobscottle on the front to function as an advertisement.

This beer name came from a play on words using “helles”, which is a german beer style. I created a striking black and white poster design with a skull as the focal point and some german-style folk art florals. The poster design then became the label design when the beer was eventually canned, and the artwork was so popular it was also printed on a hoodie.
